Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup (115g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup (150g) brown sugar, packed
  • 1/4 cup (50g) white granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 1 tsp (5ml) vanilla extract
  • 1 cup (125g) all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup (30g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 tsp (3g) baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp (1.5g) salt
  • 1 cup (170g) semi-sweet chocolate chips or chunks

Instructions:

  1. Beat the softened butter and both sugars together using an electric hand mixer until the mixture looks pale and fluffy.
  2. Stir in the egg and vanilla extract until the batter is smooth and cohesive.
  3. Sift the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt into the wet mixture.
  4. Mix on low speed just until the white streaks of flour disappear; do not overmix.
  5. Gently fold in the chocolate chips by hand.
  6. Scoop rounded tablespoons of dough onto a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  7. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 9–11 minutes.
  8. Remove the tray when the edges are set but the centers still look slightly soft and underbaked to utilize residual heat.
